In baseball, the best seat in the house is always from behind home plate. From the eyes of Gary Carter, this was always his favorite view. As an All-Star player, World Champion, and multiple Gold Glove winner, Carter had an incredibly impressive career playing baseball. In his new autobiography, Still a Kid at Heart: My Life in Baseball and Beyond, Carter reminisces about his life as a ballplayer, broadcaster, coach, and manager.

Carter has always gone where his heart has led him, which is why he declined a scholarship to play football for UCLA so he could play catcher for the Montreal Expos. Even though Carter had little experience behind the plate, he knew as soon as he put on the catcher’s gear that he had found where he belonged. In Still a Kid at Heart, Carter expresses some of his greatest memories and achievements including:

• Becoming the first player to be called out at Shea Stadium for a curtain call
• Winning Game 6 to clinch the 1986 NLCS that lasted nearly 5 hours and 16 innings
• Winning the 1986 World Series
• Starting the Gary Carter Foundation, which has raised $8 million for leukemia
• His induction into the Hall of Fame in 2003

After leaving professional baseball at age 38, he embarked on a new journey. Still a Kid at Heart describes Carter’s path to broadcasting, golfing, coaching, and managing. Carter considers managing his “true future calling,” and still hopes manage a major league team down the road. Along with his future job prospects, he offers insights on the future of the players and the game, important people he has met throughout his life, and the steroid era including his thoughts on Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire.

Still a Kid at Heart is an endearing story about a man who followed his heart and lived out all of his dreams. When Carter started in the majors he was given the nickname “kid.” Even though he’s no longer wearing a uniform, he says he will always be a kid at heart, because baseball allows you to stay a “kid” no matter what your age.

About the Authors:

Gary Carter played baseball for the Montreal Expos, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants, and Los Angeles Dodgers. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2003, and his life has remained a part of baseball through his work as a broadcaster, coach, and manager.

Phil Pepe is a longtime New York baseball writer and the author of over 40 books on sports, including collaborations with Yankee legends Mickey Mantle, Billy Martin, and Whitey Ford. Pepe was the Yankees beat writer for the New York Daily News from 1968-1981 and is former president of the Baseball Writers Association of America.
