Long before Shane Victorino gained fame as a Gold Glove center fielder, All-Star, and World Series champion with the Philadelphia Phillies, he was a precocious child on the island of Maui, frustrating teachers with his inability to sit still and tagging along with older boys to neighborhood ball fields. For Victorino, diagnosed at an early age with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, sports became an ideal outlet for his boundless energy. As the first Maui native ever to appear in a World Series, Victorino played an integral role in giving his team, and the city of Philadelphia, a memory for the ages. In Shane Victorino: The Flyin' Hawaiian, readers will find the compelling story of a young man whose persistence and determination helped him overcome obstacles and emerge victorious at the highest level of his profession.Author Biography

Long before Shane Victorino gained fame as a Gold Glove center fielder, All-Star, and World Series champion with the Philadelphia Phillies, he was a precocious child on the island of Maui, frustrating teachers with his inability to sit still and tagging along with his older brother to neighborhood ball fields. Diagnosed at an early age with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, sports became an ideal outlet for Victorino's boundless energy, though at times his on-the-field outbursts threatened to overshadow his play.
In Shane Victorino: The Flyin' Hawaiian, author Alan Maimon provides more than a fascinating account of an unlikely American success story; it is a detailed and insightful look at one of baseball's most electrifying talents and the determination, spirit, and support system that helped him reach the pinnacle of his sport.
Never the biggest or strongest kid in school, Victorino's speed caught the attention of scouts and to his surprise offers to play college and professional sports poured in during his high school years. Eventually he decided to cast his lot with baseball, signing a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and crisscrossing the country on buses while playing for minor league teams in Montana, Washington, North Carolina, Florida, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. These years, from 1999 to 2005, were the ultimate test of his resolve, both in terms of learning new skills on the baseball field and working to control a disorder that tried his ability to stay mentally focused.
When Victorino's career prospects looked most bleak, the Phillies offered what was likely his last realistic shot at making it in the big leagues. Embracing the Rocky Balboa spirit of the town in which he played, the undersized underdog from Hawaii made the most of the opportunity. As the first Maui native ever to appear in a World Series, the "Flyin' Hawaiian" played an integral role in giving his team and the city of Philadelphia a memory for the ages.
In Shane Victorino: The Flyin' Hawaiian, readers will find the compelling story of a young man whose persistence and determination helped him overcome obstacles and emerge victorious at the highest level of his profession.
