When is No. 7 really No. 1? Whenever you\'re talking about anything that has to do with Mickey Mantle.
New York Yankees fans and New York Yankees detractors rarely agree upon anything. But Mantle\'s greatness was one of those rare topics. In the 1950s and early \'60s, America was dominated by John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe,
Elvis Presley and Mantle. But it was Mantle\'s unmatched combination of good looks, awe-inspiring athletic skill,
natural charisma and All-American boy persona that set him at the top of this class.
Our Mickey: Cherished Memories of an American Icon by Bill Liederman and Maury Allen (Foreword by Yogi Berra) allows some of Mantle\'s most famous fans to reveal why they adored the superstar so much. The contributors who share their favorite experience with Mantle include a full constellation of stars including:
• Billy Crystals
• Hilary Rodham Clinton
• Dan Rather
• Donald Trump
• David Halberstam
• Burt Reynolds
• Henry Kissinger
• Yogi Berra
• Ted Williams
Mantle was a little of everything for everyone, and that fact is underscored by the vast difference revealed in this collection of stories. From childhood memories like Dan Rather\'s memory of a great base-running play to hilarious adult stories like Mantle\'s frank evaluation of a friend\'s ability in a fantasy camp, Our Mickey covers all the bases on the man who rounded them routinely with ease.
Our Mickey does what countless songs, movies, shows and previous books have failed to do - capture the essence of an icon by allowing the most recognized and respected names in entertainment and athletics to tell the man\'s story in their own words.
About the Authors
Maury Allen is a nationally known sportswriter and author with more than 30 books on baseball to his credit, including best sellers on Joe DiMaggio and Casey Stengel. He began his writing career on small newspapers, moved to Sports Illustrated magazine and was a baseball expert and columnist for the New York Post and the Gannett newspapers for more than 40 years. Mickey Mantle was always the most exciting personality he covered on and off the field.
Bill Liederman was an outstanding high school tennis player and college basketball player. He was the founder of the New York Restaurant School before pursuing his dream of opening a restaurant with Mickey Mantle. He boldly approached Mickey Mantle about a partnership. Mantle agreed to come into the deal after Liederman told him the new place would be another Toots Shor\'s, a hangout for sports fans, athletes, and business people. The restaurant opened in 1988 and the new partners became close friends, which they remained until Mantle\'s death in 1995.
