Overview

When coach Nick Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa in 2007, he boldly proclaimed “We want to be a champion in everything that we do.” Since that time, Alabama has won three national championships and become the nation’s number one destination for recruits and the top source of NFL talent while simultaneously graduating its players. No other program has won more games, captured more awards, or come close to approaching the kind of consistent success as the Crimson Tide. In Nick Saban vs. College Football, author Christopher Walsh not only explains what separates Saban from his peers and compares his accomplishments to some of the all-time legends, but tells why, if there were a Mount Rushmore of college football coaches, Saban’s face would already be on it. From his upbringing in West Virginia to his relationship with legendary coach Bill Belichick, “the process” has not only led to Saban having a statue along Alabama’s “Walk of Champions” in front of Bryant-Denny Stadium, but the establishment of a new standard that may be unparalleled in college football history.

After the passing of legendary Alabama football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant in 1983, fans waited for a new leader to restore the Crimson Tide to its rightful place as one of the greatest college football teams in the nation. They found that leader in Nick Saban, former head coach of the Miami Dolphins, LSU, Michigan State University and the University of Toledo. Since becoming ’Bama’s head coach in 2007, Saban has re-built the team from the ground up and has led the team to three national championships over four years, something unheard of in today’s game. Saban’s arrival in Tuscaloosa marked the beginning of a new era… and a new football dynasty.

In Nick Saban vs. College Football: The Case for College Football’s Greatest Coach (Triumph Books, September 2014), Alabama football sportswriter Christopher Walsh imagines his own college football version of Mt. Rushmore and argues that Nick Saban has already earned a spot among the greats. He backs up his argument with thorough research and statistics comparing Saban to legendary coaches from the past and present, expertly giving those coaches the credit they deserve while also proving Saban’s excellence. Highlights include:

  • Saban’s relationship with other coaches and mentors, including his mentor and close friend Bill Belichick.
  • Details about Saban’s championship teams and comparisons to other sports dynasties from the past, including Notre Dame in the 1940s and Minnesota in the 1930s.
  • A breakdown of reasons why Nick Saban is such a good coach, including his family background, his mentors, his attention to detail, etc.
  • The two points Saban stressed when he first arrived in Alabama in 2007.

For the first time, Nick Saban is celebrated for his superb leadership skills and his unstoppable pursuit of perfection. A detailed evaluation of Nick Saban’s outstanding career thus far, Nick Saban vs. College Football is a must-read for longtime Alabama fans as well as college football buffs across the country.
