Woody Hayes was one of the most colorful characters football has ever known. Most coaches today are more like chairmen of the board than hands-on coaches. The real coaches rant and rave, grimace, groan and sweat the details about every play. That was Woody Hayes.
I Remember Woody by Steve Greenberg and Dale Raterman gives fans the most intimate look at Hayes\' life and career by allowing those people who knew the Ohio State University football coach to tell his story themselves. The authors interviewed everyone who had anything to do with Hayes\' life and their personal stories are all here. From assistant coaches to former players, administrators, friends, opponents and the media they\'re all here with stories about on-the-field situations and off-the-field moments of conflict and caring that very few fans know anything about.
I Remember Woody goes past the X\'s and O\'s of football. This isn\'t a biography of a football coach\'s life. It\'s the story of an inspiring mentor who was an expert at guiding young men into adulthood.
What other coaches have interests outside the game like military history, civil rights and literature? What other coaches stop practice to recite the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson or Chair Mao? Only Woody Hayes.
I Remember Woody pulls back the curtain on the private side of this man who was in front of the public\'s attention for decades. Some people may have thought they knew what made Hayes tick, but they don\'t know the man behind the myth until they read this unparalleled and inspiring book about a coach who changed the lives of countless men and women.
