EDGAR: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY
By Edgar Martinez with Larry Stone
Edgar Martinez, one of the most dynamic sluggers in Major League Baseball history has partnered with veteran Seattle Times columnist Larry Stone to tell the remarkable story of his life in baseball in his new autobiography Edgar: An Autobiography (On-sale date: June 11, 2019).
“I’m really excited to tell my story,” said Martinez. “There were a lot of twists and turns along the way, and I got to play with great players like Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson and Ichiro, as well as managers like Lou Piniella. I think people will enjoy reading about my journey.”
Edgar: An Autobiography explores Martinez’s childhood in Puerto Rico, where at only 11 years old he elected to remain at home while his parents relocated to New York. Martinez stayed with his grandparents, working through school and demonstrating the persistence and work ethic that would propel him to the Hall of Fame.
At 20, fate came calling in the form of a tryout with Seattle, where the future Mariner would spend his entire 18-year career. In nearly two decades of stellar play, Martinez made seven all-star teams and earned the distinguished Roberto Clemente Award. His achievements on the field, when paired with his impact on the lives of his fans, cemented his place in the pantheon of Seattle sports icons.
Stone captures Martinez’s voice, showcasing the humor, humility and candor that made him a fan favorite. “Edgar has a fascinating backstory,” Stone said. “He’s as gracious as humble as he was in his playing days.”
Whether providing insights on the craft of batting or sharing behind the scenes anecdotes from the clubhouse, nothing is off limits in this illuminating and engaging autobiography.
