Take the wilderness with you wherever you go.
A Voice in Our Wilderness by award-winning Chicago Tribune columnist John Husar with Foreword by Bob Verdi allows outdoor-enthusiasts to enjoy all the aspects of nature and the wilderness that they love, but may have difficulty in describing.
Husar, who was the Chicago Tribune\'s beloved outdoor columnist until he died in 2000, was one of the greatest
nature writers of his generation. His love of all the things that the Midwest landscape had to offer jumps off the page with vibrant and emotional stories that entertain, teach and even change the future.
Whenever Husar saw something in the outdoors that he knew was wrong he took it as a cause that he championed for the people via his column. Thanks to his work as a respected writer, he was able to save the bike and hiking trails along the Illinois & Michigan Canal. His columns were also central to conversion of 32,000 acres of Army land into open spaces for the public.
A Voice in Our Wilderness is organized by how a day unfolds, from morning\'s first light to ghost stories told around the campfire. Husar\'s insatiable appetite for a good story led him to every corner of the Midwest to uncover more to learn about camping, hunting, fishing, hiking and simply enjoying the outdoors.
A Voice in Our Wilderness is a book for all ages and all levels of interest in the outdoors. For the nature-enthusiast, it will reconfirm and enhance their appreciation for the outdoors. For the young adult learning about activities outside, it will provide perspective and direction from an experienced professional.
About the Authors
John Husar joined the Chicago Tribune\'s sports department staff in 1966. In 1985, he was named the newspaper\'s outdoors columnist, a role he enthusiastically served until he died of liver failure in the summer of 2000. He was so respected by the outdoors community that in 2001 the Illinois Conservation Foundation announced it will create the John Husar Under Illinois Skies Endowment, a program in which urban children are provided with camping experiences and outdoor learning opportunities at an Illinois state park
